New Legal Track (LL.M.) New Legal Track in GMD Masters starting September 2024

We kick off the new year with fabulous news! From September 2024 onwards, Leiden University’s Europa Institute will offer a new LL.M. track attached to the multidisciplinary master programme on the Governance of Migration and Diversity (GMD). This new master’s degree will focus on the legal aspects of migration, asylum, non-discrimination, integration and diversity.

Joint Event - Guest lecture by Lotfi el Hamidi “Wolves and poor wretches” & The 2023 Han Entzinger Award Ceremony

Save the date for February 29! The LDE GMD Centre Governance invites you to Lotfi el Hamidi's guest lecture and the Han Entzinger Award Ceremony.
 
During the guest lecture, author and journalist Lotfi el Hamidi takes us on a journey through the first two decades of the 21st century, reflecting on the aftermath of 9/11. Explore the emergence of populism, heightened anti-migrant sentiments, and the foothold of radical Islam in Dutch society.

Book launch - Argonauts of West Africa: Unauthorized Migration and Kinship Dynamics in a Changing Europe, by Apostolos Andrikopoulos (Harvard University & University of Amsterdam)

We were please to co-organized the book launch event of "Argonauts of West Africa" with the IMISCOE Gender & Sexuality in Migration Research Standing Committee (GenSeM). Together with author Apostolos Andrikopoulos, discussants Amisah Bakuri and Jamel Buhari, and moderator Laura Cleton, we explored how unauthorised migration shapes the lives of West African migrants navigating Europe's complex challenges.

Are there lasting solutions for irregularized migrants? - Webinar Launch for the Special Issue "Irregularized Humanitarian Migrants-Policies, Rationales, and the Search for More Durable Solutions"

Last December there was an online launch of the Journal of Refugee Studies’ Special Issue, “Irregularized Humanitarian Migrants-Policies, Rationales, and the Search for More Durable Solutions.” Guest-edited by Zeynep Kasli, Marieke van Houte, and Arjen Leerkes, the event provided a migrant-centred perspective, exploring insecurities prompting migration. Research on Mid-size Cities and Migration

In this insightful blog post, Asya Pisarevskaya (assistant professor) and Marthe Hesselmans (senior researcher) explore how mid-sized cities in the Netherlands address newcomer settlement challenges. Gain valuable insights into their ongoing research in municipalities like Sittard-Geleen, Tiel, and Velsen as these cities strive to enhance governance for newcomers and strengthen the fabric of their cities. GMD students celebrated the end of 2023 with a successful potluck event 

Towards the end of 2023, GMD students gathered at Cafe Tom Tom for the annual potluck event. As Silke, the chair of the student board, shared, “It was nice getting to know each other better through fun conversations, delicious homemade food and a pub quiz organized by the board! “As Adrienne (event and outreach committee) shared, the GMD students’ multicultural backgrounds were exchanged through food from all different parts of the world!” Learn more about the GMD Masters’ student board!
