Delivering for people and the planet
This month the 27th Conference of the Parties (COP27) will be held, this year in Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt, where "Heads of State, ministers and negotiators, along with climate activists, mayors, civil society representatives and CEOs will meet [...] for the largest annual gathering on climate action" with the motto "Delivering for people and the planet".
No need to stress the urgency of the matter here, as the SENSE community will be acutely aware already and many are also involved in IPCC reports and other matters concerning climate change.

At WIMEK, the Wageningen SENSE partner, we have been discussing our own climate footprint this year, and developed a policy to reduce the climate footprint as an organisation. We hope that this will enable some behavioural changes and will inspire others to take similar steps.

Next to that we are thinking about steps to strengthen the SENSE network and the support we give to SENSE PhD candidates. Since we have a new website, we have a Current research functionality to enable PhD researchers to easily find each other. To make it easier for you to get your own PhD project included, we made a form you can use to submit your data, and will stimulate new A1 course participants to fill the form. Of course you will remain the owner of your data, and we will adjust of remove any information when you ask as.

In addition, we will soon open a blog section on PhD life on the SENSE website (https://sense.nl/blog/). Here, we will post stories from PhD candidates on their PhD experiences. We hope this will inspire many of us during our journeys. If you are willing to write a blogpost yourself, let us know!

Using crushed minerals to combat climate change
Can minerals help extract the greenhouse gas CO2 from the air? PhD student Emily te Pas (WUR) is investigating the potential of spreading crushed silicate minerals on agricultural land. ‘This is still pioneering at this stage. It is important to collect data: does it work and is it safe?’’

Nitrogen boundaries exceeded in many world regions
It has long been known that humanity is exceeding planetary boundaries for nitrogen use. Scientists have now mapped those exceedances regionally for the first time. Whereas countries in north-western Europe and parts of India and China are emitting far too much nitrogen, there is actually room for intensification of nitrogen use across much of Africa and South America. The research was published today in the scientific journal Nature.

Bioinformatics with Linux and Python, 20 February - 3 March 2023
Linux and Python, a dynamic, readable programming language, is a popular combination for all types of bioinformatics work, from simple one-off scripts to large, complex software projects. This workshop is aimed at complete beginners and assumes no prior programming experience.

Grasping Sustainability: the context and potential impact of your research, 13-17 March 2023
To date, many different scientific concepts and approaches of sustainability exist. What are the differences and what do they entail? What is your role as a scientist in achieving sustainable development? How can you apply sustainability in your own research? And in doing so, how can you deal with facts, uncertainty, values and opinions? This course will enable you to think about the ‘bigger picture’, grasp sustainability and to apply concepts and approaches to your own research, in a collaborative learning environment. To ensure that the content of the course is aligned to your own research, the content of the course will also be determined by the research topics of the participants.

A1 SENSE Introduction Course, 28-29 March 2023
This course brings together PhD candidates that have the ambition to work on environmental issues, and who have just started their journey within SENSE.During the course, you will discuss the need for interdisciplinary research and start to think about what role you would like to play as a scientist in solving environmental issues. The course will also be part introduction to personal leadership, exploring what is important to you, and hence talking about how to tackle any potential challenges you may face along the way. And you will meet other PhD candidates with which you will share a lot of the same experiences with.

Water-Energy-Food Nexus symposium, 7 November 2022
The OECD predicts there will be 9 billion people on Earth by 2050. At the same time, it is anticipated that global water needs will rise by 55%, energy consumption by 80%, and food production by 60%, all of which could have an impact on land use patterns. In light of these forecasts, the importance of the Water Energy Food Nexus(WEF) thinking is needed more than ever.

In this symposium, we aim to provide a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art, gaps and advances in WEF research. We invited well-known keynotes and prominent early-career scientists to cover a wide range of topics including water and energy footprints, the role of forests and food waste, governance, and many more. Sounds interesting? Then see you in November!

Call for participation: Spark (deadline: not yet finalised, but not earlier than March 2023)
Spark grants aim to stimulate unusual collaborations to address societal challenges. The grants do this by offering initial financial support to start building a committed project team with whom to explore the potential of an idea and/or to test whether it can be taken further and developed into a project application, for an Unusual Collaborations grant or another funding scheme. Spark grants are thus a low-threshold stimulus to support connection with others outside one’s own disciplinary background, to initiate collaboration around a research idea, to share knowledge and best practices, and to develop something together.

Open Competition Domain Science - M (deadline: 31 July 2023)
ENW-M grants are intended for curiosity-driven scientific research with impact. The ENW-M grants offer researchers the opportunity and freedom to start, and/or strengthen excellent, challenging and innovative lines of research, both mono disciplinary, multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary. For this call for proposals, your application must fit in the NWO Domain Science. Consider at an early point in time if the contents of your application meet this condition. In case of any doubts, for instance because your application is (partially) multidisciplinary, please contact one of the contact persons for this programme. This person can advise you about the substantive connection between your application and this Call for Proposals.
