Editorial

It is almost spring, a time to get active again, explore and re-invent yourself.
At the moment as SENSE with our new director we are doing just that, we want to explore new opportunities and reinvent the network.

We are currently exploring opportunities to become a more international network. But before taking any steps, we wanted to hear from the SENSE network. Therefore, we organised a brainstorm session with PhD students from all SENSE institutes, to hear about their ideas about SENSE and ask them to reflect on the ideas that we ourselves have for the future. It was a very informative meeting that gave us a lot of food for thought. We will keep you all posted about the developments.

Big data exploration and object-oriented programming with Python |26 February - 01 March 2024

Python is a dynamic, readable language that is a popular platform fit for executing different kinds of numerical problems, from simple one-off scripts to large, complex software projects. This workshop is aimed at people who already have a basic knowledge of Python and are interested in using the language to explore and visualize large datasets and write more complex programs using object-oriented programming techniques.

Grasping sustainability: Connecting your research for wider impact | 04-08 March 2024, Wageningen

To date, many different scientific concepts and approaches of sustainability exist. What are the differences and what do they entail? What is your role as a scientist in achieving sustainable development? How can you apply sustainability in your own research? And in doing so, how can you deal with facts, uncertainty, values and opinions? This course will enable you to think about the ‘bigger picture’, grasp sustainability and to apply concepts and approaches to your own research, in a collaborative learning environment. To ensure that the content of the course is aligned to your own research, the content of the course will also be determined by the research topics of the participants.

Crop Modelling and Climate Change: Training the Next Generation of Crop Modelers for Crop Model Development and Improvement | 10-15 March 2024, Ede

In this age of artificial intelligence models, mechanistic crop growth models are more important than ever. Plant and crop growth simulation models are now a basic tool for many researchers. Yet, there is a shortage of model developers, scientists with knowledge about underlying mechanistic processes and skills to transform this knowledge into scientific equations and sound models. Such modelling skills are highly demanded in the labour market.

There is, therefore, an urgent need to train the next generation of scientists on the further development of dynamic crop simulation models. This post-graduate course focusses on just that. Crop models refer to models that deal with crops, contrasting with e.g. virtual plant models that are focussing on interactions between individual plants. Together with international senior scientists in crop modelling, participants will take up the challenge to acquaint themselves with the process of crop modelling and to develop new insights to strengthen current crop models.

Mathematical Models in Ecology and Evolution 18 March - 30 June 2024, Groningen

Mathematical models have become an indispensable tool in ecology and evolutionary biology, to the point that aspiring scientists in these fields must have a working knowledge of basic mathematical modeling techniques. This course teaches such techniques practically from scratch, without requiring much background knowledge except elementary high school algebra and a little calculus.

Biocatalysis and Protein Engineering 8-12 April 2024, Delft

The Advanced Course Biocatalysis aims to familiarize participants with the integrated, interdisciplinary approach required to utilize the catalytic potential of enzymes and whole cells for the production of useful compounds.

Organic chemists, enzymologists, microbiologists and (bio)chemical engineers from the faculty staff of Delft University of Technology and other universities, together with invited international experts from industry, will offer a selection of theory and practice. In this way, the course will provide an intensive and in-depth treatment of the state of the art and the necessary link between fundamental knowledge and practical applications in industrial scale processes.
