About farmers, citizens, and the climate

“This can really make me sad… we are going to reach the 1.5 degree temperature rise already by 2034… and then all of us vote for BBB?!?” The words of one of my beloved ones after she read an article with the heading “The 1.5 degree is dead” in the national news.

This afternoon, March 20th, at 14.00 CET, the IPCC will present its Summary for Policymakers of “Climate Change 2023: Synthesis Report”. For those of you who would like to follow it: the press conference will be live streamed: https://bit.ly/SYRPRcfe.

The announcement about the 1.5 degree will not come as a surprise to people involved and/or interested in climate research. And we see to our abhorrence how adequate measures are endlessly being delayed.

Also undeniable: the overwhelming success of BBB, the “BoerenBurgerBeweging” (FarmerCitizenMovement) at last week’s Dutch elections. A new political party that all at once became the largest in all of our provinces. Most analyses I read and heard about that, point to the inability of the current Dutch government to tackle pressing crises in society, leaving people, be it farmers or citizens, in uncertainty for too long. Our administration seems paralysed by crisis situations and its aim for consensus and detailed procedures. The climate crisis is one of these crises, and I am very curious how the influence of BBB will work out.

But next to my shared concern about the rapid global warming and the BBB, I felt a little ambiguous about this text on my phone by someone who is both very smart and educated at an academic level, but also loves holidays to far-away countries and seems not to relate her own behaviour to the issue she is concerned about.

My today’s newspaper contains an article about the possibly too optimistic climate models that do not take human behaviour into account, which is why solutions that technically work out on paper, are not being implemented.

"For many challenges, scientific perspectives alone are not enough. Societal knowledge is needed to understand and define problems, identify alternatives, evaluate strategies, and design and implement processes."
You can read these words again, later in this e-News, with the announcement of the TRED conference SENSE partner WIMEK is currently organising, from 12-14 June. I really hope that this conference can contribute to solutions that work. If you want to be involved, you are very much invited to participate or to host one of the interactive sessions.

Long-term measurements show: air quality models need revision
A fundamental assumption for the scientific prediction of air quality needs to be adjusted. This follows from the analysis of long-term measurements in the urban area of Inssbruck, Austria. Near-Earth air there contained up to 50 per cent less ozone than predicted values. According to Wageningen scientists who contributed to the study lead by Prof. Thomas Karl (University of Innsbruck, Austria), this is related to high nitrogen monoxide levels in the area, emitted by diesel engines. The study's conclusion may have an impact on future air quality policy.

Where should hydrology go? - by Harro Jongen and Tessa van Hateren
Harro JongenIn 1965, UNESCO launched the first International Hydrological Decade to promote hydrology as an independent scientific discipline. This initiative has since grown into a global movement boosting hydrological research around a changing theme: the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS) Scientific Decades. The last two decades have shown that community efforts can shape the field of hydrology and increase collaboration between different groups.

Tessa van HaterenTo promote the involvement of early-career scientists (ECS) in the discussion on the next theme, we decided to become active and to organise discussion sessions specifically for ECS. We – this is a group of PhD candidates of Wageningen University & Research – who gathered in spring 2022 to go on a trip through Europe. The perfect occasion to organize ECS discussion sessions on the next IAHS scientific decade.

After the trip, together with the co-authors, we combined the discussions in an opinion paper (link). In this paper, we present how we see hydrological threats due to climate change and population growth to be the central problem for hydrology in the coming decade.

Upcoming courses and discussion groups
A1 SENSE Introduction Course, 28-29 March 2023
This course brings together PhD candidates that have the ambition to work on environmental issues, and who have just started their journey within SENSE.During the course, you will discuss the need for interdisciplinary research and start to think about what role you would like to play as a scientist in solving environmental issues. The course will also be part introduction to personal leadership, exploring what is important to you, and hence talking about how to tackle any potential challenges you may face along the way. And you will meet other PhD candidates with which you will share a lot of the same experiences with.

Climate Information for Adaptation, 3-7 July 2023
Are you a PhD or postdoc dealing with complex climate change adaptation challenges in water management, agriculture or are you specialized in climate change adaptation? And do you want to understand and learn how to use climate information, models and scenario’s in a demand driven instead of a data driven way? In this summer school professionals and PhD students will learn together and from each other in a mixed classroom, across multiple areas in climate change and its adaptation. This summer school is a co-creation space for better understanding collaboration in (cross-boundary) learning among researchers and professionals. You will work in a multidisciplinary team to develop a specific case study proposed by one of the team members.

Pathways to Sustainability Conference 2023: See the future, 4 April 2023
Taking the year 2060 as our point of arrival, we get new insights into the challenges of transformation, the big shifts that we must consider if we think about sustainability in terms of forty years or more. Together we look back, piece together and learn. What do the changes that we were able to bring about look like? What/who were the crucial triggers for this transformation? And did we (or better: who did) see them coming in 2023?

TRED conference 2023: Co-creating space for collaborative research and learning to inspire, interact and integrate, 12-14 June 2023, Wageningen and (12 June) online
Climate change, the transition to a circular economy, and issues concerning human health, are examples of challenges we need to address in our society these days. These issues are both urgent and complex and require the integration of different (scientific) knowledge. However, for many challenges, scientific perspectives alone are not enough. Societal knowledge is needed to understand and define problems, identify alternatives, evaluate strategies, and design and implement processes.
But when, how, with whom, and even why we should integrate knowledge are not always clear. Moreover, although transdisciplinarity requires (new forms of) collaboration, many researchers and societal members feel alone in their endeavours.
The Transdisciplinary Research, Education and Dialogue initiative (TRED) seeks to further transdisciplinary science through creating a safe space for dialogue, unpacking theories, practices and essentials of knowledge integrations.
We look forward to co-creating space for collaborative research and learning with you.
