HU and WKZ are developing a robot to help young patients with a fear of injections
Most children feel afraid of injection needles. For some children this aversion is so strong that taking a blood sample is a complex matter. The Wilhelmina Children’s Hospital (WKZ) is specialised in children with fear of needles and asked our students and researchers to see what role social robots might play for them. Can such a robot sufficiently distract children or even help take away the fear?

A new building at Utrecht Science Park Bilthoven: Impetus
The new building Impetus will be realized in the heart of the Science park and offer various tenants a lettable floor area of 14.000 m2. It will be a highly sustainable building that allows for almost any layout desired by the tenants with the transparent and flexible design. Impetus will offer space for laboratories, offices, and small-scale production facilities. The building is expected to be completed in 2025.

Utrecht University starts research on stranded common dolphin
A dead common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) was found along the coast of Texel on the 10th of January. An animal keeper from nature museum Ecomare found the animal, after which it was transported to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine for further investigation. This common dolphin is a young adult male weighing 47 kilograms and 1.70 metres long.

Seventeen organizations sign for a sustainably accessible Utrecht-East
"Together we are committed to a sustainably accessible Utrecht-East." That is what seventeen major organizations of Kantorenpark Rijnsweerd and Utrecht Science Park promised on December 20, 2022. Together they signed a pledge. Main goals: more ov and fiets, less peak hours.

Giro d'Utrecht 20 May 2023: sign up
Last year the Utrecht Cycle Racing Trilogy was completed with the start and finish of the Vuelta race in Utrecht. That’s good reason for a little celebration and a reworked concept, which is why the Classico Giro Utrecht is now called Giro d'Utrecht, with a new design identity and website.  The Giro d'Utrecht will be taking place on Saturday 20 May, once again starting on Heidelberglaan. 
You can take part individually or as a company team.

The Utrecht Marathon powered by Utrecht Science Park is taking place on 21 May 2023, with various distances for all types of runners and ages. The marathon connects Utrecht Science Park with the city and the region of Utrecht and is a perfect match for the Utrecht vision ‘Healthy Urban Living for All’.

European collaboriation improves treatment and research
Collaborating with European scientists improves the treatment of children with cancer worldwide. For example, Dr. Hans Merks and Dr. Reineke Schoot of the Prinses Máxima Center are working from various collaborations to find better treatment protocols for children with sarcoma, a tumor in the bone or so-called soft tissue.

Green areas in the city where you can relax, move, play and meet up are important for healthy urban living. But these green spaces are coming under increasing pressure. Care Embassy's GreenTeam report 'Together toward a circular hospital' 
From the GreenTeam of the Care Embassy, the initiative "Together to a Circular Hospital" was set up, in which the Princess Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology and the UMC Utrecht are also involved. Last December, the eponymous report was published with the results of the multidisciplinary hackathon that took place at UtrechtInc during the Utrecht Science Week.

Extending chemo slashes risk of aggressive childhood leukemia coming back
Giving three years of chemotherapy to children with an aggressive form of leukemia instead of two years lowers the risk of their disease coming back after treatment by three times. The survival rate of all children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia together has further increased to 94%.

The tech world gathered in Las Vegas on January 5th 2023 at the annual Consumer Electronics Show. Dozens of Dutch innovative entrepreneurs and startups present themselves at this prestigious fair in the desert and gambling city. Six Utrecht companies are part of the extensive trade mission.

Olympos starts with new courses from 13 February 
With the OlymPas you can participate in a wide range of courses. Courses take place once a week at a set day and time and are given by a professional sports instructor. Most course periods last ten weeks/lessons, in addition there are course periods that run five weeks/lessons. On 13 February a new course period will start: registration starts on Monday 30 January.

Get a sneak peek into the entrepreneurial world
Would you like to learn what to expect if you start a science-based company? Many researchers are curious about how they can implement their research in the market. To join you don't need to have a startup idea, you just need to be curious to learn more. The course will run between the 13th of February and the 17th of March, and registration is open until the 9th of February.
