Utrecht Science Park gets the longest rainbow bike path in the world 
Thanks to an initiative of student Elias van Mourik (22), Utrecht will have the longest rainbow bike path in the world. The bike path will be located in the Utrecht Science Park. University of Applied Sciences Utrecht, Utrecht University and the UMC Utrecht have joined forces for the realisation, because they fully endorse the symbol. With the rainbow bike path the three institutions want to show that everybody is welcome to be who they are. Photo: Harold van de Kamp

La Vuelta to be held in the Netherlands in 2022, second stage to finish at Utrecht Science Park 
All the lights are green for the start of the Spanish cycling race ‘La Vuelta’ in the Netherlands in 2022. After the planned start in 2020 was cancelled as a result of coronavirus, all the partners (namely the ASO, the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, the provinces of North Brabant and Utrecht, the cities of Breda, ’s-Hertogenbosch and Utrecht and the private partners) joined forces once again to make this event possible in the Netherlands.

Edwin Pos is New Scientist science talent 2021
Evolutionary ecologist Edwin Pos was chosen as New Scientist science talent 2021. The jury praised Pos on a number of points, including the high degree of independence and responsibility that he has already taken on at a young academic age. Pos is assistant professor at the Department of Ecology and Biodiversity and scientific director of the Botanical Gardens of Utrecht University.

Environmental Vision Utrecht Science Park 2040
The municipality has published the draft Environmental Vision (in Dutch) for the Utrecht Science Park 2040. Together with Utrecht University, the UMC Utrecht, the Utrecht Science Park foundation and with input from many users and residents, the municipality has drawn up a draft Environmental Vision for the Utrecht Science Park. From 15 June to 27 July, anyone can respond to the draft Environmental Vision and the associated SEA.

The construction of Accelerator Utrecht started about a year ago. This month another milestone was celebrated: the topping out of the building. Kadans Science Partner and its partners are proud of the development and look forward to the further construction and completion.

Immunotherapy in a backpack at Princess Máxima Centrum
Most of the approximately 30 children diagnosed with neuroblastoma each year can now receive immunotherapy at home. Thanks to a new treatment protocol at the Princess Máxima Center for pediatric oncology, fewer side effects occur with the drug dinutuximab and the child has to go to the center in Utrecht less often for admission. The medicine pump fits in a backpack so that the child is free to move.

Personalised rehabilitation with motion sensors, big data and artificial intelligence
Every year, an average of 40,000 Dutch people suffer a stroke or brain haemorrhage. A significant proportion of these people need to learn to walk again, which often proves difficult. Based on data from motion sensors, researcher Michiel Punt of the Lifestyle and Health professorship is working on an application to make better predictions about the risk of falling and the chances of recovery.

Novel technology for improved detection of clinically relevant chromosomal rearrangements in tumors
Researchers from the group of Wouter de Laat, in collaboration with biotech company Cergentis and lymphoma experts of 5 Dutch hospitals, developed a novel technology for improved detection of clinically relevant chromosomal rearrangements in tumors. The method, FFPE-TLC technology, promises to improve diagnostics for lymphoma and may also be relevant for rearrangement detection in other cancers such as sarcoma and lung- and prostate cancer.

Queen Máxima pays an (online) visit at the Princess Máxima Center
Her Majesty Queen Máxima paid an online working visit to our center. The theme of the visit was the integration of care and research – three years after she officially opened the center. With great interest she took in the latest developments and priorities in the Máxima via Zoom. The Queen found it a shame that the visit had to be digital; she happened to drive by the center the day before.

900 years of city rights Utrecht, big party with all Utrechters
In exactly one year, Utrecht will be celebrating 900 years since the city received city rights. Mayor Sharon Dijksma and alderman Anke Klein invite all Utrecht residents to celebrate the 900th anniversary next year. How? That is determined by Utrechters themselves. The municipality has made 1.75 million euros available for citizens to make all kinds of festivities possible.
