At the end of December 2021, Hugo de Jonge, former Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport, announced that cardiac surgery and cardiac catheterizations in children and highly complex interventions in adults with congenital heart defects will be concentrated in two centers in the future: Erasmus MC and UMC Utrecht. How do the pediatric cardiac surgeons and pediatric interventional cardiologists of UMC Utrecht view this announcement and role?

Artificial intelligence helps scientists to better predict the evolution of glaciers under climate change 
For the first time, a research team has used deep learning – a type of artificial intelligence – to simulate the future evolution of glaciers at a regional scale. The ability to capture these so-called nonlinear effects is one of the main advantages of deep learning, compared to the classic models currently used. The researchers published their results this week in Nature Communications.

Princess Máxima Center: children with leukemia have better prognosis than young adults 
Children with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) have a better prognosis compared with young adults. The difference between these groups has grown in recent years, suggesting improvements in AML treatment have had less of an impact for young adults. That’s according to a new analysis of patient data from the period between 1990 and 2015.

Natural gas-free Utrecht Science Park another step closer 
Utrecht university, UMC Utrecht, HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht, SSH and the International School have issued a declaration of intent in which they express their wish to install a shared thermal energy storage system. This system will enable these partners to sustainably heat and cool their buildings at the Utrecht Science Park in the future.

How much water does an elephant consume? HU students promote water conservation 
Climate change is forcing us to take a different approach to water. But how can we convince the general public of the importance of water conservation? TU Delft commissioned a group of Communication and Multimedia Design (CMD) students from HU Utrecht University of Applied Sciences to conduct research at Blijdorp Zoo in Rotterdam. ‘The students really made some waves in terms of communication.’

Jayden opens new sensory room at the Princess Máxima Center 
The multi-sensory room (‘snoezelruimte’), especially designed for relaxation or (sensory) stimulation of children, was festively opened on January 7. Jayden cut the ribbon . The multi-sensory room has a bubble unit, waterbed, projector, fiber glow and a magic globe. Children can also use different 'do walls' and types of snoozing materials, such as soft discs and balls.

Our increasingly digital society can only succeed if everyone is represented. NLdigital aims to ensure that 50% of the Dutch ICT sector will be made up of women by 2030. NLdigital has created a list of the 'Most inspiring woman in Tech', including none other than: Anita Bosman. As director of HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht's Institute for ICT, she is committed to encouraging more female enrolment in ICT programmes.

These unique, crocheted Miffy toys are made exclusively for Friends of UMC Utrecht & Wilhelmina Children's Hospital (WKZ). The Miffy toys are available in the hospital gift shops and through the Friends of UMC Utrecht & WKZ webshop. The proceeds will be used to support children at the WKZ and the underprivileged women in Vietnam who crochet the Miffy toys. We are extremely proud of this world-famous mascot!

22 May: Classico Giro Utrecht with start and finish at Utrecht Science Park 
The classic cycling race first passed through Utrecht in 2010, and the Classico Giro Utrecht has since become an annual fixture that starts and finishes at Utrecht Science Park. The 2022 edition is set to be a true Italian celebration with music, food and a friendly atmosphere. That applies to the entire route as well as the start and finish line.
