Princess Máxima Center builds toward the future |
This month, the Princess Máxima Center for pediatric oncology gave the go-ahead for a new and large construction project: two extra floors will be built on top of the existing research building of the research hospital in Utrecht. Preparations for the building works started this week. Board member Gita Gallé: ‘This expansion gives further shape to the integration of care and research in the Máxima Center.' |

New gene identified in arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy by Hubrecht Institute |
Researchers from the group of Eva van Rooij at the Hubrecht Institute used advanced sequencing technology to better understand the heart disease arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy, in which heart muscle tissue is replaced by fat cells. Using explanted human hearts from patients that underwent a heart transplantation, they found regions in which heart muscle was actively degenerated and identified a new gene, ZBTB11, that drives heart muscle cell degradation. |

UMC Utrecht: Two lung covid patients show inflammation in entire brain |
Several studies are underway on the relationship between lung covid and specific organs such as heart or respiratory muscle. These new findings show for the first time 'in vivo' (in living people) damage in the brain. Researchers from Amsterdam UMC and UMC Utrecht saw inflammation throughout the brain region in two patients with long-term symptoms after a coronavirus infection. This has not been shown before in living people with lung covid. |

Princess Máxima Center signs Green Deal Sustainable Care |
On 2 June 2022, board member Gita Gallé will sign the Green Deal Sustainable Care on behalf of the Princess Máxima Center for pediatric oncology. By doing so, the Máxima Center commits itself to the four goals of the Green Deal: reducing CO2 emissions, working in a circular way, reducing the amount of medicine residues in the water and promoting a healthy environment in healthcare. |

Prestigious Leducq Scholarship for Hester den Ruijter |
Hester den Ruijter, professor of cardiovascular disease in women at UMC Utrecht, together with Mete Civilek (University of Virginia), has received a 7.5 million euro Leducq grant from the Leducq foundation. The grant was awarded to the consortium for research on sex differences in arterial calcification. Hester is EU coordinator of this international network. |

New construction in Utrecht Science Park: student complex High Five |
The Student Housing Foundation (SSH) is going to build a student complex at Utrecht Science Park. The SSH gave the building the name ‘High Five’ since it is their fifth student complex in Utrecht Science Park. The building will be 74 meters high and consists of 2 towers. The towers will house independent student rooms and student rooms with shared facilities. Residents can respond to the plan until the 7th of July. |
