On 9 April, the Dutch government decided to fully fund RegMed XB's National Growth Fund (Nationale Groeifonds) proposal. Up to 56 million euros will be allocated to set up a pilot plant for regenerative medicine.

Intravacc, a global leader in translational research and development of viral and bacterial vaccines, today announced that it has obtained positive pre-clinical results for its SARS-CoV-2 Outer Membrane Vesicle (OMV) based recombinant Spike protein (rSp) candidate nose spray vaccine.

Celebratory opening of Prodigy for local CAR-T production Princess Máxima Center
CAR-T cells are currently still produced abroad, but this is set to change. This week the Prodigy, a machine for making CAR-T cells, was given a celebratory welcome in Utrecht. With this, the Máxima takes an important step toward offering this treatment more quickly and efficiently for children with cancer.

GenDx and Utrecht University Museum conclude sponsorship agreement on museum renovation
Utrecht University Museum (UMU) has long been the place where society and science meet.  Redesigning the museum exhibitions and displays and developing new presentations will be taking place in collaboration with partners. 20,000 participants sought for COVID-RED study
UMC Utrecht launched a study to see if a ‘smart’ bracelet can help in the fight against corona. The ‘smart’ bracelet continuously measures changes in physiological parameters such as temperature, heart rate and respiration. A change in these indicators may suggest an infection with COVID-19. For example, the bracelet could detect an infection days before the wearer has symptoms.

Hogeschool Utrecht is recruiting hundreds of new colleagues
In
HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht will start a national recruitment campaign for hundreds of new teachers, researchers and support functions in April. With the campaign, the HU aims to recruit approximately 400 employees (280 FTEs), the majority of whom are university lecturers. This makes it the largest recruitment campaign in HU history. The recruitmentpage is only in Dutch.

First patient-derived organoid model by Hubrecht Institute for cervical cancer 
Researchers from the group of Hans Clevers developed the first patient-derived organoid model for cervical cancer. They also modelled the healthy human cervix using organoids. In close collaboration with the UMC Utrecht, Princess Máxima Center for pediatric oncology and the Netherlands Cancer Institute, the researchers used the organoid-based platform to study sexually transmitted infections for a herpes virus.

Research at HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht: Using artificial intelligence to predict chemical safety
To develop artificial intelligence that detects the hazardous properties of chemicals and can predict their toxic effects in humans: this is the goal of an international research project in which researchers from the Innovative Testing in Life Sciences & Chemistry research group are participating. According to the researchers, toxicological research based on artificial intelligence is both more accurate and more future-proof than research using laboratory animals.

Successful pricing of Nasdaq IPO of Lava Therapeutics
Gilde Healthcare announced that its portfolio company, LAVA Therapeutics, has successfully achieved pricing of its Nasdaq initial public offering (IPO), expected to result in gross proceeds of approximately $100 million. LAVA is a biotechnology company focused on transforming cancer treatment by developing a platform of novel bispecific antibodies engineered to selectively induce gamma-delta T cell-mediated immunity against tumor cells.

Eight million euros for artificial intelligence

The Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) has pledged no less than eight million euros to support a knowledge consortium whose participants include UMCs and universities from four cities. Together, we hope to apply this funding to accelerate the application of innovations in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and bring them to market faster by means of start-ups.
