Utrecht region is Europe's most competitive region
The European commission has designated Utrecht as the most competitive region of Europe. This according to the recently published Regional Competitiveness Index. This means that Utrecht is the region with the greatest competitive strength. Researchers compared 234 European regions on nearly 70 indicators for the business climate. Utrecht scored the highest on both education and innovation.

Utrecht Marathon powered by Utrecht Science Park on May 21, 2023 

The course for the 39th Utrecht Marathon powered by Utrecht Science Park has been announced! On 21 May, the city will play host to the Utrecht Marathon. The start and finish line of this classic race will be located at Utrecht Science Park. The full route maps are available on the Utrecht Marathon website.

UMC Utrecht and Princess Máxima Centre take legal action against decision to close pediatric heart centre 

UMC Utrecht and the Princess Máxima Centre are forced to take legal action against the decision of the Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport to remove the interventions for congenital heart defects from Utrecht. If the children's heart team disappears from Utrecht, seriously ill children will have to travel to another location in the country for highly specialised and radical parts of their treatment where there is no oncological expertise.

HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht is working to improve quality of life and reduce health disparities through a new interprofessional approach to learning. At the HU GEZOND&WEL Centre, students from health-related degree programmes collaborate with students from wellness programmes as part of an integrated approach to address requests for help.

‘DNA replication in a tube’ provides new insights into chromatin assembly research from Hubrechte Institute
Researchers from the Hubrecht Institute re-created DNA replication and chromatin assembly in a test tube. They discovered that the crosstalk between these two fundamental processes differs between the two newly replicated DNA strands. The results, published on 21 March 2023 in Nucleic Acids Research, can contribute to a better understanding of deregulated chromatin replication in cancer.

Construction of Plus Ultra Utrecht officially started on Utrecht Science Park 

Utrecht Science Park gets another innovative multi-tenant building. Kadans Science Partner and Stichting Utrecht Science Park officially gave the go-ahead for the construction of Plus Ultra Utrecht on 13 April 2023. Plus Ultra Utrecht will be nearby the Genmab R&D Centre and the recently completed Accelerator Utrecht.

The digital version of the map can be found on our website. The old maps on the information kiosks located throughout Utrecht Science Park will be replaced with the new maps over the course of the spring.

The power of innovation and cooperation aimed at a healthy, sustainable society is at the focus of the third edition of Utrecht Science Week. From Friday 29 September to Sunday 8 October 2023, the Utrecht Science Park will open its doors wide for students, professionals and all other interested parties to meet and exchange knowledge. Everyone is welcome.

Marjolijn Haasnoot and Sanne Akerboom in Scientific Climate Council
Two researchers from Utrecht University have been asked to serve on this council. Dr Marjolijn Haasnoot specialises in water management and climate adaptation, Dr Sanne Akerboom is a lawyer and political scientist specialising in Regulation and Governance of Energy Transition. The Scientific Climate Council will provide government and parliament with broad, well-founded scientific advice.

Vaccinating babies and elderly against RS virus is possible reveals research by Prof. Dr. Louis Bont of UMC Utrecht
It is becoming possible to vaccinate babies, pregnant women and the elderly to prevent serious infection with the RS virus. This is according to three studies by Prof Dr Louis Bont, paediatrician-infectiologist at UMC Utrecht. The new vaccines are a turning point in the fight against the RS virus, which is one of the leading causes of infant deaths worldwide.

As many natural materials as possible, company clothing made of recycled PET bottles and a circular working method in care and research. The Princess Máxima Center also wants to deliver top performance when it comes to sustainability. That is one of the reasons why the Máxima signed the Green Deal Sustainable Care, from which various green initiatives have emerged.

HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht and large consortium receive 2 million grant
HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht has received a €2.3 million grant to carry out the SMART project together with a large consortium. Within the SMART project, an approach will be developed in which self-monitoring, artificial intelligence and behavioural change techniques are used to support people with osteoarthritis of the hip and knee in the areas of self-management, physical functioning and participation.

Sportcentrum Olympos: offers free bootcamp sessions
Olympos now offers free outdoor boot camp training sessions three times a week for employees of organisations at the Utrecht Science Park. Exercising in between or immediately after work is relaxing and gives you a good energy boost at the same time.
In addition to training on Tuesdays and Thursdays, there is now also training on Mondays!

New joint projects between Princess Máxima Centre and Hopp-KiTZ 

Nine new research projects have been announced in the twinning program between the Princess Máxima Center and the Hopp-KiTZ childhood cancer center in Heidelberg, Germany. The joint projects will look at wide-ranging topics including targeted treatments, clinical trials and diagnostics.
