Wilhemina Children's Hospital & Princess Máxima Center collaboration: young adults in paediatric ICU
The Wilhelmina Children's Hospital (WKZ) and the Princess Máxima Center have decided that young adults from the Princess Máxima Center will, in theory until the age of 21, be treated in the Children's ICU at the WKZ. In most cases, young adults from the age of 18 go to the Intensive Care for adults, but in order to give continuity to paediatric cancer treatment, from now on this will be different for children with cancer. By providing intensive care in the paediatric ICU to young adults up to 21 years of age, yet another step has been taken in improving care for children with cancer in the Netherlands.

Merck Life Sciences Acquires HUB Organoids
On 6 January, Merck announced the acquisition of HUB Organoids, expanding their offering in the field of next-generation biology. At the heart of HUB's work are organoids; miniscule lab-grown models that replicate human organs. These innovations revolutionise drug development, advance disease research and reduce reliance on animal testing. Among other things, this acquisition will be conducive to bridging the gap between laboratory research and clinical trials.

Research Hubrecht: Protein from zebrafish awakens dormant genes for heart repair
Researchers from the Bakkers group at the Hubrecht Institute have succeeded in repairing a damaged mouse heart with a protein from zebrafish. They found that the protein Hmga1 plays a key role in heart regeneration in zebrafish. In mice, this protein was also found to be able to repair the heart by activating dormant repair genes without adverse side effects. The research represents an important step towards regenerative therapies to prevent heart failure.

Population study UMC Utrecht to provide more personalised breast cancer screening
Could breast cancer be detected earlier in women with very dense breast tissue if they would also receive a contrast mammography (CEM) or accelerated MRI scan during the population screening? UMC Utrecht is now leading a large trial population study in order to answer that question: DENSE-2. DENSE-2 will take seven years to complete. The scientist will then be able to draw scientifically-based conclusions about the effectiveness of accelerated MRI and contrast mammography.

Project HU: With your banana peel you generate green energy
A machine that generates green energy from organic waste: that sounds like music to the ears of, in particular, the Chemistry and Chemical Engineering programmes and, by extension, the Institute for Life Sciences & Chemistry at HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht. A dream that may soon hopefully become reality. In the spring of 2025, a so-called Bio-digester is expected to be installed in the building at Heidelberglaan 7. The Bio-digester will convert pure separated organic waste into green energy with the goal to run the building on the energy generated by the Bio-digester!

Several pilots were already carried out in 2024 during FC Utrecht's league matches and open days at the Utrecht Science Park. Thanks in part to the success of these pilots, it was decided that in 2025 the tram would run as standard at weekends when football matches are played or when future students travel for the Open Day of Utrecht University and HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht . A long-cherished wish is thus coming true.

When Lasse Lamet, bachelor student Global Sustainability Science, visited a farm in Germany for a study project, he saw a biomeiler: a large round tank in which compost is made. Building an improved version at the Utrecht Science Park, that seemed a fun and above all practical internship assignment to Lasse. He mobilised staff and students to realise the project. Last week, the biomeiler was placed at the Tolakker, the educational farm of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
