New biomarker from blood can detect cancer in dogs |
Cancer cells secrete a specific ribonucleic acid (RNA). This is done through small cellular vesicles that circulate in the body. This RNA turns out to be a new biomarker to show cancer and can be detected through a standard blood sample. These liquid biopsies are an attractive alternative to tissue biopsies, as they can be taken without entering the body, for example through laparoscopic surgery. Researchers from Utrecht University demonstrated this in dogs with cancer. |

HU Stories: Make gas from your apple peels |
Vegetable and fruit waste: you keep it in a container in your garden for a week where it starts to ferment a bit – and you can smell it. But what if we turn that problem into a solution? Put the waste in an oxygen-tight container and optimize the fermentation? Then you can make your own gas. That is the idea behind the biodigester for consumers. |

Thyroid organoids: measuring hormonal changes in a dish |
Researchers from the lab of Hans Clevers (Hubrecht Institute) – in collaboration with the UMC Utrecht, the Utrecht Platform of Organoid Technology (UPORT) and Maastricht University – used organoid technology to grow miniature human thyroids that produce thyroid hormones. These mini-thyroids can be used to model how thyroid hormones are produced and how this is regulated in health and disease. Scientists worldwide can use the model to identify new treatment options for patients suffering from thyroid diseases, like Graves’ disease. |
