Intravacc starts concept design for multifunctional, high-capacity vaccine plant for national requirement
Intravacc announced that its new modern pilot production plant will soon be operational. In addition, Intravacc is leading a consortium that will start with the concept design (phase I) of a so-called Multi Purpose Vaccine Production Plant (MPVPP). In times of emergency, this factory will be able to quickly and safely produce sufficient doses of vaccine specifically for the Netherlands.

HU students test a robot that helps children to express their feelings
Impulse control can be complicated for young children. Nick van Breda, co-initiator of SAMbuddy, feels that young children should be able to withdraw at any time so they can vent their feelings. The SAMbuddy robot helps children by allowing them to express their feelings in the moment. As part of the research for their minor, students from HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht visited schools to test the cuddly robot on children.

Smoke-free public space at Utrecht Science Park
Since 1 August 2020, all educational sites are smoke-free by law. A further step has now been taken towards making Utrecht Science Park smoke-free with the signing of a declaration of intent by a number of partners at Utrecht Science Park. The goal is to make the whole of Utrecht Science Park a clearly recognisable and attractive smoke-free area.

Researchers from the lab of Hans Clevers and the UMC Utrecht grow crying human tear glands 
Researchers from the lab of Hans Clevers (Hubrecht Institute) and the UMC Utrecht used organoid technology to grow miniature human tear glands that actually cry. The organoids serve as a model to study how certain cells in the human tear gland produce tears or fail to do so.

Team Utrecht University wins Hogeronderwijspremie universities of 800.000 euros
The Mixed Classroom external linkteam of Utrecht University has won the Hogeronderwijspremie of 800.000 euros. That is the second prize in the category of universities. With this innovative form of education students and professionals learn from and with each other.

Once again, University Medical Center Utrecht has been voted the best hospital in the Netherlands this year. The city’s largest hospital ranks 22nd in the global ranking ‘The World’s Best Hospitals 2021’ compiled by Newsweek. (in Dutch).

Princess Máxima Center: Higher risk of being overweight and hormone imbalances in children with a brain tumor
Children with a brain tumor have an increased risk of being seriously overweight. These weight problems may be related to a malfunctioning hormone balance, according to a large-scale long-term study by researchers at the Princess Máxima Center. The hormone system of children who gain weight quickly after diagnosis should be better monitored.

30 million EU grant for infectious diseases research of UMC Utrecht
ECRAID-Base is the European Clinical Research Alliance on Infectious Diseasesa. International cooperation makes it possible to respond more quickly to infectious diseases that pose a threat to public health. ECRAID-Base has secured financing for five years with a subsidy of € 30 million from the European Commission. (in Dutch only)
