From 30 September to 7 October, the second edition of Utrecht Science Week will be held. The partners of the Utrecht Science Park offer a versatile and diverse programme highlighting the (application of) scientific achievements in Utrecht. New Scientist interviewed Hans Clevers prior to Utrecht Science Week
Hans Clevers will be delivering the first Utrecht Science Lecture on Friday 7 October, the final day of the Utrecht Science Week. During the lecture Clevers discusses the current state of research on healthy and sustainable living as part of the Utrecht Science Week. Immediately after the lecture: Open house at Hubrecht Institute, coffee and organoids! In the Interview with New Scientist he tells about his fascination for sciences and how this fascination started at a young age.

Join the celebration of 900 years of Utrecht on Wednesday 5 October
The knowledge partners of the Utrecht Science Park and the City of Utrecht are working closely together in organising the Utrecht Science Week. The cooperation this year is linked to the celebration of '900 years Utrecht: city without walls'. On Wednesday 5 October, a number of speakers will discuss the importance of Utrecht Science Park and it’s knowledge partners for the development of the city. To conclude the substantive programme, there will be festive drinks.

On Monday 3 October RIVM gives a lecture about how you can make healthy and sustainable food choices
During this interactive session on 3 October at the Utrecht Science Week, scientists of RIVM will let people reflect on their eating habits. How well can we assess whether products people eat are healthy and/or sustainable? What measures on our diet are necessary to improve the climate, nature and public health?

The Environmental Vision Utrecht Science Park 2040 was approved on 15 September
The Utrecht City Council approved the Environmental Vision Utrecht Science Park 2040 on 15 September with two motions and an amendment. This vision describes the ambitions and the desired development direction of the USP until 2040. It sets out the ambitions for growth of housing, working, services, sports and sustainable energy generation and its extent.

Students can join one of UtrechtInc’s free validation programmes till 10 October
Since 2009, the startup incubator UtrechtInc has supported staff and students from Hogeschool Utrecht, University and UMC Utrecht who want to explore this pathway. In these years they have helped more than 300 startups and we have seen great examples of people combining their academic roles with entrepreneurship.

International School Utrecht campus on Cambridgelaan one step closer
The municipality of Utrecht, Utrecht University and the International School Utrecht (ISUtrecht) are working together in realising a new school building in the Utrecht Science Park. The construction of the school is one step closer because the mayor and aldermen of Utrecht now made the draft zoning plan available for comments. This means that residents of Utrecht and those involved can respond to the plan over the next six weeks.

The Princess Máxima Center states there is more attention needed for children with cancer
In a national public campaign, the Princess Máxima Center for Childhood Oncology is drawing attention to the need to further improving the treatment and quality of life of children with cancer in the Netherlands. The campaign message can be seen in September via the Máxima channels, on billboards and via the expressions of Máxima ambassadors.

Research of the Princess Máxima Center shows that chemotherapy speeds up DNA-level aging
Chemotherapy leads to faster aging at the DNA level of healthy cells in children with cancer, new research shows. This aging contributes to the increased risk of developing a new, second cancer in childhood cancer survivors. PhD candidate Eline Bertrums from the Princess Máxima Center: ‘Our research lays the foundation for examining if a different treatment could reduce or even prevent the risk of a second cancer.’

Another edition of World of Health Care (WoHC) will take place on the 28th of September. This is the signature event for Dutch Life Sciences & Health companies with international ambitions. The Dutch government, the Dutch diplomatic network and Task Force Healthcare are joining forces once more to position, promote and join up the Dutch Life Sciences & Health sector abroad.

Step closer to redevelopment of Willem C. Van Unnik building
The Willem C. Van Unnik building is being redeveloped to a central location of great importance to the lively Utrecht Science Park campus. The building will be completely renovated into a sustainable home for the university’s education, research and office activities. The renovation of the Van Unnik building is part of Utrecht University’s wider housing plans for the centre of the science park.

GenDx organised the annual ‘GenDx Stem Cell Donor Recruitment Day’, at Thursday 15 September 2022. If you register using our event code ‘GENDX22’, GenDx will support the Matchis Foundation financially by covering the costs they make for processing your registration, i.e. 35 euros. The code is valid from 12 - 23 September.

Delayed completion date for new RIVM and CBG building
MEET Strukton, the consortium that is developing the new building for RIVM and CBG, recently announced that the construction project is experiencing further delays. MEET Strukton has stated that the new building will be completed in early 2025. As a result, the intended relocation date will be pushed to mid-2025.
