Research into faster fungal diagnosis Princess Máxima Center, WKZ, Westerdijk Institute and UMC Utrecht
Every year, about 150 children in the Netherlands get leukaemia. Intensive treatment makes them extra susceptible to infections, including fungal infections. Researchers at the Princess Máxima Center, WKZ, the Westerdijk Institute and UMC Utrecht are working on a new DNA test in children with leukaemia or after a stem cell transplant that can detect these infections faster and more accurately. That test could provide a faster and more accurate diagnosis of this important complication in the future.

Extra tram rides to Utrecht Science Park at weekends and during Utrecht Marathon
Earlier, the province of Utrecht announced that from 2025, trams will be used more often on weekends. This is a long-cherished wish that has been fulfilled. As standard, the tram will run at FC Utrecht's Eredivisie matches and during open days of HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht and Utrecht University. The tram will also run during the Utrecht Marathon on Sunday 18 May. The event continues to grow, and with the large number of participants of over 20,000 and spectators that will travel to the Utrecht Science Park, it is therefore an improvement that the tram will run on this day.

First patients in UMC Utrecht treated with new technique for heart rhythm disorders
UMC Utrecht, along with three other centers in Europe, successfully treated the first patients with severe cardiac arrhythmias worldwide with Abbott’s new ablation system. This new technique uses extremely short electrical pulses instead of heating or freezing heart tissue. For patients with atrial fibrillation, this technique is safer, more effective and faster. This promising treatment is now expected to be used increasingly in Europe for patients with cardiac arrhythmias.

Tenth edition Meet the Professor on Wednesday 19 March again successful
How do you become a professor? How old do you have to be to become a professor? These kinds of questions were raised by the visit of professors among primary school students of the 92 classes that participated in Meet the Professor. 2000 children enthusiastically welcomed 180 researchers from Utrecht University and UMC Utrecht again this year. Each class welcomed one professor and a colleague, the “fellow cyclist”. Together they told the class what exactly they are researching, and why.

Cycling for cancer research
From 4 to 6 March, Utrecht Marketing and NBTC attended ITB Berlin, the leading trade fair for the global travel industry. This year's theme was Cycling. And of course Utrecht, as number 1 cycling city in the world, was present. On the exhibition floor, visitors were invited to cycle a lap at the Utrecht Marketing stand: for every kilometre cycled, NBTC and Utrecht Marketing donated to charity. The end result? 300 cycled kilometres raised €1,500 for cancer research at UMC Utrecht.
