At the start of November, a total artificial heart was implanted in a patient with very severe heart failure for the first time in the Netherlands at UMC Utrecht. The artificial heart replaces and takes over the function of the entire heart. The innovative artificial heart improves pump function and blood supply, reducing the patient's symptoms. Implantation of the artificial heart was successful.

Utrecht University plants 6,000 indigenous trees and shrubs to enhance biodiversity
This week, in the meadows of Utrecht Science Park, Anton Pijpers, chairman of the Executive Board of Utrecht University, dug the first shovel into the ground where more than 6,000 indigenous bushes and trees will be planted. This green strip of the university will form a new 400 meter-long ‘hedgerow’, which will contribute to the biodiversity of the area, and restore the connection with the Amelisweerd forest.

Genmab and University Museum Utrecht collaborating on museum renovation
University Museum Utrecht (UMU) has been introducing visitors to science for years. And successfully, too: in 2019, no fewer than 75,000 visitors visited the museum. As the museum building cannot cope with these numbers, the museum is being rebuilt and renovated. After the reopening, the museum will be able to accommodate 100,000 visitors a year.

MRI scanner measures the beating of the brain
Researchers at UMC Utrecht have taught the MRI scanner a new trick. With it, the device can map how the brain pulses slightly under the influence of the heartbeat. The beating of the brain is a fascinating phenomenon that we currently know very little about. It probably plays an important role in flushing out toxic waste, and thus in preventing brain diseases such as Alzheimer's disease.
