Rose Sharifian is speeding up! |
After Rose heard in May this year that she won a Faculty of Impact Grant from the NWO (Netherlands Research Council), the world did not stand still for her.
With her company SeaO2 she took part in the "European WaterCampus Business Challenge 2022", organized by WaterCampus in Leeuwarden. It was an inspiring and instructive week about entrepreneurship and building networks. There she won the challenge award for the best business pitch, which of course focused on her company SeaO2.
Of course, she was also present at the NWO Innovation Festival #TEKNOWLOGY. This festival took place on 31 May and was the festive start of the Faculty of Impact, in the presence of all 10 participants. There she was able to discuss technology and business visions with Prince Constantijn van Oranje-Nassau (on behalf of Techleap), Pieter Duisenberg (chair of the Association of Dutch Universities), and Margot Weijnen (chair of NWO).
SeaO2: bringing CO2 capture from seawater to market
To limit climate change, CO2 capture from the environment is inevitable. Electrochemical methods to capture CO2 are promising thanks to the green chemistry and because they fit well within the national transition to sustainable energy. Among these methods, the use of bipolar membrane electrodialysis (BPMED) for carbon capture from the ocean is particularly promising because it does not produce or require any harmful substances, does not require re-activation and because our extensive experience allows us to scale up the process quickly. The capture products, CO2 and/or calcium carbonate, can serve as green feedstock for the food industry, greenhouses and synthetic fuel, among others, thus contributing to a circular carbon economy.
NWO Faculty of Impact
Within the Faculty of Impact, the ten selected researchers with entrepreneurial ambitions will receive two years of intensive and personal guidance from experts in the fields of entrepreneurship, intellectual property and investments. During this period, they will retain (or be granted) an appointment at their own university, but will be exempt from administrative and teaching obligations. This gives them time and space to focus on bringing their invention to the world. This grant involves an amount of 200,000 euros.
