Waterman Sustainability Award for Ludovic Jourdin and Tom Burdyny |
The TU Delft AS faculty’s Waterman Sustainability Award of this year was awarded to the duo of Ludovic Jourdin and Tom Burdyny. Prof. Karel Luyben presented the award to the two researchers for their work on so-called electrochemical conversion systems, that can turn CO2 into organic products. Dr. Waterman himself and his son (pictured on the photo below) were also present to attend the award ceremony.
Currently, society needs solutions that can make chemicals or fuel from the greenhouse gas CO2. Both award winners are approaching this societal challenge through ground breaking research on processes that integrate chemical production with the energy transition. In other words, their goal is to develop sustainable and cost-effective processes to produce organic compounds from electricity and CO2.
Finding solutions to technological challenges requires collaboration across organisational boundaries and technology interfaces. This collaboration is epitomised by the award winners: they both work and publish together and both actively contribute to TU Delft's e-Refinery initiative.
