Graag hadden wij u op 5 augustus in Museum Volkenkunde ontvangen voor de opening van AZTEKEN. Vanwege de regels over samenkomsten is er een aangepast programma en daarom presenteren we op die dag de première van de online openingsfilm. Met een welkomstwoord van inhoudelijk directeur Wayne Modest, een openingsceremonie, dans en een impressie van deze tentoonstelling door de samenstellers, brengen we deze unieke expositie bij u thuis. Kom daarna vooral langs om te genieten van deze tentoonstelling!
De expositie
De Azteken: een van de iconische beschavingen uit de wereldgeschiedenis. Precies 500 jaar geleden kwam er een einde aan het Azteekse rijk. Geholpen door inheemse geallieerden en door uit Europa meegenomen ziektes, bracht de Spanjaard Hernán Cortés de machtige Azteekse beschaving ten val. Die gebeurtenis is aanleiding voor deze internationale tentoonstelling, een coproductie met het Linden Museum in Stuttgart.
Indrukwekkende voorwerpen zoals stenen beelden, verfijnde sieraden en tekeningen uit codices, verlevendigd met bijzondere verhalen en actuele inzichten: dát zijn de ingrediënten van deze tentoonstelling.
De tentoonstelling vertelt het verhaal van de Azteken zoveel mogelijk vanuit hun eigen perspectief. Unieke topstukken, die vaak nog niet eerder buiten Mexico te zien zijn geweest, tonen de grote artistieke, intellectuele en economische ontwikkeling van hun cultuur. AZTEKEN is een must-see voor jong en oud. Zo is er de speciale interactieve familie route en kun je dagelijks terecht in het Azteken atelier voor een gevarieerd en creatief programma.

We would have loved to invite you to attend the grand opening of AZTECS on 5 August in Museum Volkenkunde. However, the rules about gatherings mean there is now a modified programme, so we will instead be premièring the opening ceremony film online on that day.
With words of welcome from director of content Wayne Modest, an opening ceremony, a dance event and an impression of this exhibition by its compilers, we will be bringing this unique exhibition right into your home. So, make sure you come along afterwards to enjoy this exhibition!
The exhibition
The Aztecs: one of the iconic civilisations from world history. It is now exactly 500 years ago that the Aztec empire came to an end. Aided and abetted by indigenous allies and diseases imported from Europe, the mighty Aztec civilisation was brought down by the Spaniard Hernán Cortés. This quincentenary of the ending of an era is what sparked this international exhibition, which is presented in association with the Linden Museum in Stuttgart.
Impressive artefacts such as stone sculptures, elegant jewellery pieces and drawings from manuscripts, brought to life by way of remarkable stories and modern-day insights: these are the ingredients of this exhibition.
The exhibition seeks to tell the story of the Aztecs from their own perspective as much as possible. Unique masterpieces, many of which have not been on display outside of Mexico before, illustrate the considerable artistic, intellectual and economic development of their culture.
AZTECS is a must-see exhibition for both young and old. For one thing, there is the special interactive family itinerary and there is the Aztec workshop that presents a varied and creative daily programme of activities which visitors can join.
