Dear reader,
In this newsletter edition, we want to spotlight the work of our colleagues and partners in Mali. Throughout the upheaval the country has witnessed since 2012, civil society and communities have been working side-by-side to pave the way to a better future for one of the largest countries in the Western Sahel.
Our Bamako office
Our Mali office, based in the capital, Bamako, is also Cordaid’s West Africa cluster office, which coordinates projects in neighbouring Burkina Faso, Senegal and Niger.
From this office, a range of programmes have been devised and delivered, resulting in significant impact for people in Mali’s northern (Tombouctou, Gao) to its middle (Mopti) and southern (Segou, Bamako, Sikasso) regions.

The challenges
Climate change, food insecurity and mass internal displacement have compounded the struggles of Mali’s population, the majority of whom are under the age of 25. Through programmes focused on sustainable livelihoods and food security, youth leadership and access to justice, Malians have addressed these challenges head on.
Our programmes
We spoke with the participants in three programmes operating across Mali, all of which have a focus on including women and young people in shaping Mali’s future. You can read their stories below. |

| PGLR+ |
The PGLR+ programme (Accountable Local Governance Programme) aims to strengthen democratic institutions in 240 municipalities across Mali, primarily in order to restore and reinforce the social contract between Mali’s local, public authorities and its youth. PGLR+ is carried out by a consortium of four Dutch NGOs.

| Jege ni Jaba |
In Bambara, Mali’s lingua franca, Jege ni Jaba means ‘fish and onions’. This programme focuses on improving Mali’s food security whilst also creating economic opportunities within food value chains, especially for women and young people.

| Just Future |
This programme, led by an alliance of international and local NGOs, is all about putting people at the centre of security and justice issues and systems. In Mali, this is allowing for a future of inclusive peace which caters to all citizens.

| Cordaid in Mali |
| Cordaid has been working in Mali for over 50 years. Since 2009, Cordaid’s interventions have been carried out directly from its West Africa office based in Bamako, in close collaboration with local NGOs. |
