A Year of Remarkable Progress: HITRIplus' 2023 Milestones and Look Ahead to 2024 |
As 2023 comes to a close, we can say that it has been a significant year for the HITRIplus project, shaped by important events and achievements. Some of the notable occurrences include the successful closure of the first reporting period, the confirmation of high interest in our webinars, the great participation to the 3rd specialized course on clinical aspects of heavy ion therapy research and the high interest that the workshop “Hadrontherapy status and perspectives” aroused. The 2023 also witnessed the launch of the clinical research Transnational Access initiatives, with more than 15 medical staff members taking the opportunity to join the clinical activities of our Hadrontherapy centers. The first outcomes achieved during this year by the joint research activities, discussed in venues of excellence such as the PTCOG and IPAC conferences and documented in scientific journals, are also highly noteworthy. After such a successful year, we eagerly anticipate the opportunities and developments that 2024 holds for our project. Wishing you good health and happiness, may the 2024 bring you immense success and fulfilment in all your endeavours. The HITRIplus Coordination team |

Empowering the Next Generation: The 2024 Particle Therapy Masterclasses |
The Particle Therapy MasterClass (PTMC) educational initiative is designed to immerse high-school students in the world of particle therapy demonstrating benefits for society related to advancements in particle physics research. The PTMC 2024 edition, 12 February to 30 March, offers hybrid and in-person sessions as well as special sessions for the International Women's Days. Several HITRIplus partners participate every year either as hosting institutes or tutors and moderators. Hence, they provide to students a unique experience, a full day of activities, including research applications and career insights. The hands-on exercises, based on the matRad Treatment Planning toolkit developed by the German Cancer Research Center, DKFZ, gives them a clear idea of the optimization processes of different treatment modalities. The program encourages further engagement from institutes and individuals who wish to contribute in promoting hadron therapy with such educational activities. This is also an opportunity to highlight the benefits of close collaboration as fostered by the HITRIplus project. Indeed, the experts of research institutes GSI, CERN, DKFZ and the European ion therapy centers together with the PTMC core team, assisted by international postgraduate students, join forces in preparing the next generation. Institutes or potential tutors that are interested in participating in the PTMC 2024 sessions are invited to register via the registration form and contact the PTMC coordinator: yiota.foka@cern.ch or p.foka@gsi.de |
