Life as an international PhD candidate
On 20 November the Dutch newspaper NRC published a large article about the position of PhD candidates without a university employment contract, often international PhD candidates: "Ongemak en schaamte over de opmars van gratis promovendi".

At SENSE we are proud of our high numbers of international PhD candidates, because we believe that this increases the impact of our training and research. But we cannot close our eyes for the often difficult position of international PhD candidates compared to their Dutch counterparts.

The NRC article addresses mainly the issue of unequal financial rewards which causes that many international PhD candidates have barely enough money to survive in the Netherlands. Although this problem is hard to solve for SENSE as a graduate school network, it is important to address the issue.

Apart from less financial rewards, unemployed PhD candidates also have less rights to for instance social benefits. Especially mothers with young children may find themselves in an extremely difficult situation, as they are not entitled to child care benefits, even if they have a partner with a regular job. Hanan Tadale Dessalegn, mother and unemployed international PhD candidate of Wageningen University, tells her story in the very pressing video story: "Teaching a woman is teaching a nation". I hope you will feel inspired by this strong and determined woman, and of course we will do our best to address this issue, although it is the result of current legislation rather than of university policy.

There are also the more common aspects of unvoluntary discrimination and the culture gap international PhD students may experience while they live in the Netherlands. Elackiya Sithamparanathan, PhD candidate and PhD education coordinator at Wageningen University, wrote a blog post about her initial astonishment about Dutch culture and habits, and how she learned to embrace biculturalism: "Does Biculturalism work?"

I hope these stories give you some food for thought, next to the nice food many of you will eat during the Christmas and New Year celebrations. We are always open to hear your own stories and options, so do not hesitate to contact us if you want.

For now we wish all of you a very good end of the year, and maybe the spirit of Christmas will open some Dutch hearts and houses for those who have to spend this season of celebrations far from their loved ones.

Marjolijn Dannenburg, Communication officer

Long-term weather app helps farmers with climate adaptation

Climate change severely impacts farmers in developing countries, and the consequences for our food supply are increasingly felt. This issue features prominently on the agenda of the climate summit in Egypt from 6 to 18 November. Waterapps is a long-term weather app developed by WUR, which helps farmers adapt to rapidly changing circumstances.

Making an Impact! Increasing the relevance of research through science-society interaction, 13-14 February 2023
This course is focused on making a plan of action. You will discover how fundamental research can be combined with societal impact in various ways without a single-best option. You will have the opportunity to reflect on the impact of your own work, learn from other PhD candidates and other researchers working at the interface of research, policy and society.

Introduction to Open Science – Concepts, benefits, and practices, 20-24 February 2023
A key goal of science is to help society solve today’s wicked challenges. This requires require reliable, trustworthy, and high-quality research. Open Science (OS) strongly contributes to achieving these requirements since it aims to make research more verifiable, transparent, and reusable. This course aims to provide a conceptual and a practical overview of OS principles.

Grasping Sustainability: the context and potential impact of your research, 13-17 March 2023
To date, many different scientific concepts and approaches of sustainability exist. What are the differences and what do they entail? What is your role as a scientist in achieving sustainable development? How can you apply sustainability in your own research? And in doing so, how can you deal with facts, uncertainty, values and opinions? This course will enable you to think about the ‘bigger picture’, grasp sustainability and to apply concepts and approaches to your own research, in a collaborative learning environment. To ensure that the content of the course is aligned to your own research, the content of the course will also be determined by the research topics of the participants.

A1 SENSE Introduction Course, 28-29 March 2023
This course brings together PhD candidates that have the ambition to work on environmental issues, and who have just started their journey within SENSE.During the course, you will discuss the need for interdisciplinary research and start to think about what role you would like to play as a scientist in solving environmental issues. The course will also be part introduction to personal leadership, exploring what is important to you, and hence talking about how to tackle any potential challenges you may face along the way. And you will meet other PhD candidates with which you will share a lot of the same experiences with.

Upcoming Events
NCGG9 Ninth International Symposium on Non-CO2 Greenhouse Gases: Identify game changers and verify impact, 21-23 June 2023, Amsterdam - Deadline call for abstracts: 15 Jan 2023
Non-CO2 greenhouse gases include many substances, such as methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), fluorocarbons (CFCs, HFCs, SF6, etc), black carbon, aerosols, and tropospheric ozone (O3). These contribute significantly to climate forcing. Reducing non-CO2 greenhouse gas emissions is often more cost-effective than reducing CO2 emissions.

The importance of this conference is increasing every new event as our window for action in the climate dossier is closing rapidly. Fortunately public awareness that we need to act now is growing. With that awareness “game changers“ are proposed that need scientific evaluation to distinguish realistic and valuable concepts from what is known in The Netherlands as “ride a bike in the sky” ideas.

Pathways to Sustainability Conference 2023: See the future, 4 April 2023
Taking the year 2060 as our point of arrival, we get new insights into the challenges of transformation, the big shifts that we must consider if we think about sustainability in terms of forty years or more. Together we look back, piece together and learn. What do the changes that we were able to bring about look like? What/who were the crucial triggers for this transformation? And did we (or better: who did) see them coming in 2023?

Call for participation: Spark (deadline: not yet finalised, but not earlier than March 2023)
Spark grants aim to stimulate unusual collaborations to address societal challenges. The grants do this by offering initial financial support to start building a committed project team with whom to explore the potential of an idea and/or to test whether it can be taken further and developed into a project application, for an Unusual Collaborations grant or another funding scheme. Spark grants are thus a low-threshold stimulus to support connection with others outside one’s own disciplinary background, to initiate collaboration around a research idea, to share knowledge and best practices, and to develop something together.

NWO-Veni, Vidi and Vici grants: simplified application process and planning 2023 (deadline 14 March 2023 for Vici and 5 September 2023 for Veni)
The introduction of a two-stage assessment procedure will streamline the application process for the entire Talent Scheme. In addition, the submission dates for the pre-proposals for the 2023 Talent Scheme are largely known: 14 March for the Vici and 5 September for the Veni. The deadline for the Vidi pre-proposal will fall in the last quarter of 2023.

Starting next year, compulsory pre-proposals will be introduced for the Veni, Vidi and Vici grants. The mandatory pre-proposal means that researchers are not immediately required to write a detailed and time-consuming research application. The pre-proposal includes a CV with an academic profile, a selection of key outputs (broader than just publications) and a short research idea. The latter is used to gauge whether the applicant’s CV fits the research. In the academic profile, researchers can outline what kind of scientist they are. What is the academic’s research focus, agenda and vision? What has he or she done to achieve that vision? NWO selects applicants from the pre-proposals who may then submit a detailed proposal.
