 Meet the Researcher!
Khin Nawarat, PhD Candidate at IHE Delft Institute for Water Education

In this edition of Meet the Researcher, Khin Nawarat, PhD Candidate at the IHE Delft Institute for Water Education and University of Twente, tells us about their PhD research, the challenges they encounter, and their vision on extreme sea levels and coastal flooding.

«I usually start by asking: do you know about coastal flooding caused by storms? Most people do. Then I explain that my research is about the very high sea levels that can cause these coastal flooding and that these are called extreme sea levels. And they occur during storms, especially when they coincide with high tides. I study how these events are changing because of climate change, mainly at the global scale. I also look beyond the physical changes and investigate their possible socio-economic and environmental consequences.»

The 'Meet the Researcher!' series is a new initiative of the SENSE PhD Council, curated by Bente-Sophie van Kalken (IVM-VU).

A1 SENSE Introductory Course: building a personal vision for your PhD  | 23 - 25 March 2027, partly online & partly in Ede

This course is designed to lead to a first draft of your TSP; and should therefore be started around one or two months after you started your PhD. The overall aim of the A1 course is to create a vision for your own PhD development, accompanied by a plan. This, so you can proactively discuss, and reflect on, the direction you want to take with your research, together with your supervision team. The online part is focused on developing a first draft of your TSP through the assignments. We will use an extended TSP form as the output, so you start discussions with your supervisors with the form they are used to. The 2-2.5 in-person days are meant to, let you reflect on, and sharpen your plans for your project, by actively engaging with the topics a starting PhD candidate needs to think about. In order to support you in this process, you will learn and try out a few reflection, planning and discussion tools. The in-person days will also provide an opportunity to get to know other PhD students in the SENSE network. You can learn about each other’s research activities, the problems that are being tackled and get the opportunity to build new links within your network.

The registration for the online part of the course is open. Please fill out this form and we will add you to the class environment in Brightspace and grant you access to the assignments that you can already do. These assignments are particularly useful for your TSP. We recommend doing them as soon as possible, even if March feels very far away.

For more information see here.

In case you are interested in either participating or teaching a course that is currently not in the programme, please do not hesitate and contact us with your suggestions.

Predicting wildfires to prevent additional emissions. Take action for a livable future.

People fleeing their homes, thick plumes of smoke, and bright orange skies: images of wildfires in Europe made frequent headlines last summer. Much further north, fires are raging that are barely receiving any attention. But it is precisely these fires that have far-reaching consequences that affect us all.

“My climate dream is to combat global warming by predicting lightning-caused wildfires. By better understanding which lightning-caused wildfires pose a major risk and how we can intervene in time, we can help limit additional emissions.” - Sander Veraverbeke, Associate Professor, Faculty of Science, Earth and Climate

Help break the vicious cycle of climate change and support this research.
