Hello, |
This is the COOPERATE newsletter with the latest information about the COOPERATE project, which during the next months (2022-2025) will define and pilot the ERA Hubs, one of the ERA policy actions defined by the Council of the European Union for the next years. Building on the vision and success stories developed within the EuroTech Universities Alliance and their R&I ecosystems, the COOPERATE partners will contribute to the future development of the ERA Hubs as a key European flagship to promote R&I ecosystems.

Line of Action 7: Innovation |
COOPERATE aims to facilitate the harmonisation of research practices and sharing of best practices across member states, promoting a more seamless and efficient research environment within the ERA Hubs network. To aid ecosystem players such as educational institutions, local industry, policymakers, and other stakeholders, a framework for nurturing dynamic ecosystems has been developed in the so-called ‘Playbook’.
In each of the newsletters one of the seven lines of action will be further elaborated with concrete tools that can be employed by an ecosystem towards the implementation of the ERA Hub framework model. This final edition: Innovation.

Innovation
A strong innovation ecosystem can be identified by characteristic such as a high number of patents, active licensing agreements, a flourishing start-up community, access to funding, robust mentorship programmes, availability of education and training, and a talented workforce. These indicators collectively create an environment that encourages the generation, protection, and commercialisation of innovative ideas, leading to societal and economic benefits.
- Patents
- Licensing agreements
- Number of start-ups
- Funding
- Mentorships
- Availability of education
- Talent pool

Wrapping up an inspiring journey with the COOPERATE project with two events in Brussels!
|
On June 4th, we held the final General Assembly meeting of COOPERATE - a project focused on developing and piloting the ERA-Hub concept, rooted in the success stories and vision of the EuroTech Universities Alliance and their Research & Innovation ecosystems.
Over the course of the project, we co-created with stakeholders across the quadruple helix and jointly we defined ERA Hubs - highlighting the central role of universities as orchestrators of regional R&I ecosystems to foster knowledge valorisation.
Additionally, we developed the COOPERATE Tools to support the development of ERA Hubs:
- A self-assessment tool to measure ecosystem maturity
- A practical playbook and toolbox offering tailored recommendations and concrete tools to elevate the maturity of ecosystems
Explore more and try out the tool yourself on our COOPERATE project website.

On June 5th, we marked our final milestone with a joint final event alongside our sister project ERA_FABRIC, where we shared our findings and explored future directions for knowledge valorization in Europe, including the emerging concept of the 4th Generation University.

Eindhoven University of Technology ResearchDay
|
On 24 June, Professor Marcel Bogers kicked off the “Eindhoven University of Technology ResearchDay” by showcasing the COOPERATE project. At Research Day the university celebrates science: to honor and appreciate our brilliant scientists, foster connections among researchers, and cultivate a deeper understanding of the remarkable research taking place at TU/e.
This year's theme is 'Collaborate to Innovate'. The university celebrates the awarding of TU/e honorary doctorate prof. dr. Henry Chesbrough and the lustrum of the Eindhoven Institute for Renewable Energy Systems (EIRES), reflecting the journey and envisioning the future of open innovation and the 4th generation university within the Brainport, national and European landscape.
Marcel his presentation emphasized the concept of Open Innovation developed by Henry Chesbrough, who received an honorary doctorate on this day from the university. Universities can play an orchestrating role, connecting regional ecosystems to address grand challenges.

In episode V, Marcel Bogers (TU/e) and Els Vandevelde (Idea Consult) talk about the COOPERATE project related to the policy side of innovation ecosystems and what role different actors play in shaping policy, and about the ‘4th generation university’: global universities that are fully integrated in their local innovation ecosystem with the aim of tackling worldwide societal challenges and driving regional economic growth.

In episode VI, Marcel Bogers and Ondrej Durkac (Czech Technical University) talk about CVUT as an innovation ecosystem example in Prague, Czech Republic. Czech Technical University in Prague is one of the largest universities in the Czech Republic with 8 faculties and is one of the oldest institutes of technology in Central Europe.
