Princess Máxima Center develops a software that gives more accurate understanding of single-cell DNA change 
New software makes it clear more accurately which DNA changes are present in an individual cell. Comparing the DNA of cells, for example before and after treatment, becomes easier and provides new insights. The computer program was developed by bioinformaticians from the Van Boxtel Group of the Princess Máxima Center. Machine learning, a form of artificial intelligence, played an important role in this.

Ginkgo Bioworks Netherlands moves to
Science Park Zeist
Just before the holiday break Ginkgo Bioworks Netherlands opened their new facilities in Science Park Zeist. As was alluded to during the opening ceremony, for a number of the team members this feit like home-coming as only 5 years before the previous Dutch DNA team, now part of Ginkgo Bioworks, had moved out of the same site to move to Utrecht Science Park.

New edition teaching refugee students at UMC Utrecht
Last year it was still a pilot, in which mostly medical students from Ukraine participated. At UMC Utrecht, they could get the final credits to receive their doctor's degree in Ukraine. This summer, the renewed edition of the educational program started again. And there is a need for it, refugees from many more countries signed up.

Researchers from UMC Utrecht and Hubrecht Institute discover that inhibiting protein ARID1A may repair heart damage 
Damage to the heart, such as from a heart attack, does not repair itself and is therefore permanent. The repair ability of heart muscle cells is lost soon after birth, when these cells transition to their adult form. Researchers from UMC Utrecht and Hubrecht Institute discovered that the protein ARID1A plays an important role in regulating this transition.

Renewed Utrecht University Museum reopens after three years 
Since Wednesday 6 September sees the University Museum Utrecht (UMU) open to the public again. 'The new UMU is the museum for everyone who is curious,' says director Femke den Boer. 'In our revamped family museum, visitors get a peek under the bonnet of science and become a researcher themselves.'

Partnership Princess Máxima Center & Western Ukrainian Specialized Children's Medical Center in Lviv, Ukraine 
The Princess Máxima Center for pediatric oncology in Utrecht, The Netherlands, and the Western Ukrainian Specialized Children’s Medical Centre in Lviv, Ukraine, have agreed upon an official partnership. With this collaboration, both centers are creating an accelerated development towards even better treatment options for children with cancer.

Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Utrecht University sets criteria to see if brachycephalic dog complies with current legislation
The Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV) announced last week that the rules for breeding brachycephalic dogs will be tightened. This is to prevent the continued breeding of dogs with traits that cause unnecessary suffering. The Genetics Expertise Centre at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine has drawn up the criteria that can be used to test whether a dog complies with the current legislation. The PETscan diagnostic system includes an interactive scoring form, which can be used by vets to issue such a statement for a breeding animal.

Successful first edition Hubrecht Talent Program: Applications still open for study year 2023-2024 
The first cohort of Bachelor’s students has successfully completed the Hubrecht Talent Program.The program, which is aimed at supporting minority students and promoting diversity in science, is still accepting new applications for the academic year 2023-2024 till September 18th. At the same time, the Talent Program for Master’s students will also start its first edition.

UMC Utrecht, UMC Groningen and Erasmus MC cooperate: 'Heart-in-a-box' means more heart transplants 
Two years ago, the first heart transplant took place in the Netherlands via a new "heart-in-a-box" technique: by making a deceased patient's heart beat again outside the body, it could still be donated. The great shortage of donor hearts prompted this new application and the first results are very favorable: 60 DCD hearts have already been transplanted and the waiting list is stabilizing.

This new season we will also offer lessons at Parnassos and of course these lessons can also be taken for free with your OlymPas. It is mandatory to book group lessons in advance.

Hans Hofstraat strengthens Life Sciences at Utrecht Science Park 
From 1 September, Hans Hofstraat will strengthen the Life Sciences ecosystem at the Utrecht Science Park as Director Business Development Life Sciences (part-time). He will be employed by the Utrecht Science Park Foundation and will also strengthen the Life Sciences Strategic Theme.
