Dear Readers, A warm welcome to the inaugural newsletter edition of the Heavy Ion Therapy Research Infrastructure, HITRIplus, project. We are delighted to share with you the advancements and latest updates of our project. This first, rather lengthy issue, demonstrates the progress achieved since its kick-off. However, if you wish to unsubscribe please use the unsubscribe button. The data protection and privacy policy of the HITRIplus project can be found here. The HITRIplus EU-funded project, uniting leading universities, research institutes, and industrial partners, aims to advance cancer treatment research using heavy ion beams. The consortium is committed to advancing the science of heavy ion therapy through a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach. The project’s innovative approach combines medical physics and clinical research with cutting-edge accelerator and technology developments to drive progress in treating cancer tumours with heavy ion beams. Further information on the project’s aims can be found in the HITRIplus web page. This first issue of the HITRIplus NewsLetters includes:

HITRIplus 2nd Annual Project Meeting: Continuing Progress in Heavy Ion Therapy Research |
The Heavy Ion Therapy Research Infrastructure, HITRIplus project has announced its 2nd annual meeting which will be held in Riga, Latvia from 26 to 28 June 2023 and will take place at the Riga Technical University (RTU), Domus auditorialis. It will bring together the project’s partners to discuss the status of the project and plan its future developments. The upcoming three-day event will include presentations from key project members, workshops on specific topics related to the project, and opportunities for networking and collaboration. During the event, attendees will engage in discussions and knowledge sharing about the latest advancements of the HITRIplus project but also in heavy ion therapy research in general. The workshop: In addition to the project meeting, RTU will host a workshop, on June 28, for the clinical and scientific communities in the Baltics with the participation of leading HITRIplus scientists. This workshop will provide a platform for clinicians and researchers to share their experiences with ion therapy, discuss current challenges and opportunities, and explore the potential for collaboration. |

HITRIplus Clinical School |
HITRIplus is pleased to announce a one-week online international specialised course on Clinical Aspects of Heavy Ion Cancer Therapy Research which will be held from the 3rd to the 7th of July 2023, online on zoom. For more information, please click here. It is free of charge and is funded by the European Union’s H2020 research and innovation programme through the HITRIplus project. This school will cover clinical aspects and it is primarily intended for medical students specialising, or who are considering to specialise, in oncology as well as clinicians of all levels in radiotherapy and particle therapy. The course will be delivered by over 35 world-leading clinicians in the field and will focus on head and neck, sarcoma, prostate, liver, pancreas, gynae and rare indications, re-irradiation, innovative methods, organ motion, treatment planning, present and future clinical trials and radiobiology. |

HITRIplus Participation to Particle Therapy Masterclass for Teachers in Sofia, Bulgaria |
The HITRIplus project coordinator, Sandro Rossi of CNAO, participated in a public event in Sofia, Bulgaria, on Saturday 13 May 2023 that demonstrated the Particle Therapy Master Class project (PTMC) to teachers and representatives of IPPOG, the International Particle Physics Outreach Group. This event was associated to the IPPOG collaboration meeting in Sofia (9-13 May 2023) taking advantage of the presence of IPPOG members and parallel activities for public in the Sofia Tech Park where it was hosted. Thus this setting provided a great opportunity to present the HITRIplus project and the educational opportunities that it provides. The PTMC project, developed and coordinated by Yiota Foka of GSI member of SEEIIST and deputy to the HITRIplus coordinator of Work Package 2 dedicated to dissemination, is integrated in the well-known International Master Classes, the flagship project of IPPOG, which offers the opportunity to school-children “to become scientists for a day”, at the early stages of their studies. For this exemplary PTMC event, tailored to training teachers, about 30 teachers could be accepted, in person, who are expected to act as a channel to the next generation of scientists. |

HITRIplus at the IPAC 23 Conference |
The HITRIplus Work Package 7, presented recent achievements in the 14th International Particle Accelerator Conference that took place in Lido of Venice (Italy) from 7 to 12 May 2023. This yearly series of conferences, the main worldwide event for particle accelerators designers, builders, and operators, has started in 2009 merging the parallel conferences organised in USA, Europe, and Asia into a large worldwide event that rotates among the three main continents. This year the attractive location near Venice and the complete end of Covid-related restrictions have convinced some 1’700 participants, the largest number ever for an IPAC Conference, to join for a week full of presentations, poster sessions, industry contacts, and parallel events. For the teams involved in the accelerator designs for HITRIplus (Work Package 7), this Conference was a very valuable opportunity to present recent work and to learn about other projects and initiatives. The Conference organisers contributed by supporting the participation of two HITRIplus Doctoral Students (R. Taylor and L. Nikitovic), who were selected to be among the more than 30 sponsored students. In terms of scientific production, 5 well-attended posters related to HITRIplus work were presented at the Conference. The related papers are already available on the web site of the Conference and will be referenced here. |
